BEIJING (Asian Metal) 8 Sep 11 – The silicon metal operating rate was high in June and the first half of July and silicon metal price dropped continuously as the supply was large while the demand was weak. In the second half of July, the silicon metal price dropped to the level which was close to the production cost in some areas with high power price, and some traders came back to the market to stockpile. Moreover, the power rationing in South China began again in late July and many silicon metal smelters in Hunan, Guizhou, Fujian and Guangxi stopped production and most smelters began to raise offers and some were holding back from selling. The silicon metal price kept increasing sharply in early August and the rising pace slowed down in the second half of August as the price had increased to relatively high level while the demand has not seen obvious improvement. But the silicon metal production situation was still unfavorable and silicon metal smelters held offers firmly in late August.
