1 Definition, classification, distribution and application
1.1 Definition
Tin (Sn) is a main group metal of IVA group with the atomic number of 50 and relative atomic mass of 118.71 . With a melting point of 231 . 89°C, a boiling point of 2,260°C and a density of 7.28g/cm3, tin is a low-melting-point silver gray metal . Pure tin is of soft quality . At room temperature, the metal is of excellent ductility, stable chemical properties, so it is always in the color of silver because it is not easily oxidized . Tin content in the crust stays at 0 . 004% with almost all existing in cassiterite in the form of tin oxide . As one of five metals (gold, silver, copper, iron and tin), tin was used by human being in 2000 B . C . At present, the metal is mainly used to produce tin solder, tin plate, alloy, chemical and others, which are widely adopted by electronics, information, electrical appliance, chemical, metallurgy, construction material, food package, machinery, atom energy, space and other industries.
