Affected by the escalating trade war between China and the United States, prices for copper cathode slumped in Chinese market in May, down from RMB48,900/t (USD7,067/t) in late April to RMB46,520/t (USD6,723/t) at the end of May. Due to the price decline, downstream consumers replenished actively with China's copper inventory decreasing gradually. LME copper prices dropped sharply from USD6,383/t in early May to USD5,817/t at the end of the month. US dollar index fluctuated within the range of 97.366-98.737 in May when Yuan-to-Dollar exchange rate dropped.
