1. Market Highlights
The demand for silicon metal did not change a lot in May compared with that in April. But low grade silicon metal prices kept rising as some producers in Northwest China cut or suspended production due to the tight supply of silica and some plants in Southwest China have not resumed production. As for high grade silicon metal, the prices edged down because of high inventory and sluggish demand. Prices for chemical grade silicon metal moved up supported by the increased overall silicon metal prices and steady demand for organic silicon. The export market saw limited transactions as exporters were unwilling to trade. On the one hand, the overseas demand was weak due to the fluctuated exchange rate affected by the trade war between China and the U.S. On the other hand, low off-grade silicon prices led to the decreased of the overall silicon metal prices, so the profit from export orders was limited.
