In December 2018, prices for Chiense black silicon carbide went down amid a stable trend. In November, demand for first grade black silicon carbide in Chinese domestic market was poor and suppliers bore heavy stock pressure, so market deals were sluggish and transaction prices moved down; transaction prices for metallurgical grade silicon carbide stayed firm. Entering December, sulfur discharge failed to meet environmnetal requirement in Gansu and environmental inspections in Tianzhu were strict. Pet coke was banned and local companies were required to cut outputs by 50% then, leading to tight supply of silicon carbide, so transaction prices stopped dipping. Smelters raised prices, but downstream clients refused to accept the price rise, so transaction prices were difficult to move up. In Ningxia, environmental inspections did not become stricter, so local supply was stable. As a result, silicon carbide supply had no obvious changes on the whole after environmental inspections became severer in Gansu. However, there was still a price gap in Ningxia and Gansu. In Ningxia, offers remained high with quotations for black silicon carbide 98%min natural lump being at about RMB6,600/t (USD977/t); offers in Gansu were lower with most standing at RMB6,300-6,500/t (USD933-962/t), and some producers' offers were as low as about RMB6,100/t (USD903/t). Prices for black silicon carbide 88%min 0-10mm inched down by RMB50/t (USD7.40/t) to RMB5,800-5,900/t (USD859-873/t) delivered to Tianjin port in late December.
With regard to green silicon carbide, supply was tight; pet coke prices in Xinjiang did not rise further. Green silicon carbide producers were afraid that extremely high prices would result in decreased deals. Therefore, transaction prices for Chinese green silicon carbide kept steady in December 2018.
In the month, the international market of silicon carbide saw fewer transactions as buyers in Europe and the U.S. left the market for Christmas holiday.
