1. Market Highlights
Prices for steel pipe rose by over RMB100/t (USD15/t) in major Chinese domestic markets during the month, boosted by prices increases of raw materials as well as psychological factors. They kept generally flat in the first half of the month, with participants retreating from the market for the Chinese New Year holiday (February 15-21) in succession, while they soared right after the holiday boosted by the news that the government of Tangshan, Hebei province required local enterprises to keep controlling blast furnace operation by 15% after Mid-March, the heating season environmental protection period. However, prices failed to go up further late of the month dragged by the insufficient downstream demand, and they even fell back in certain regions. Considering the reduced supply but stronger demand in March, insiders foresee another price increase.
