1. Market Highlights
As steel mills' purchasing price of high carbon ferrochrome for December dropped sharply by 800/t (USD123/t) to RMB6,900-7,100/t (USD1,058-1,088/t) VAT included delivered with D/P, producers in Guizhou and Hunan reduced output or halted production. In mid-December, spot supply of high carbon ferrochrome became tight; besides, spot prices for chrome ore increased; thus, prices for high carbon ferrochrome increased. While as some silicochromium producers changed the production line to ferrosilicon due to skyrocketed prices for ferrosilicon in mid-December, prices for ferrosilicon were pushed up and prices for low and extra-low carbon ferrochrome moved up accordingly. In late December, the market tended to stabilize and prices for silicochromium and low and extra-low carbon ferrochrome fell back following the release of steel mills' purchasing prices for January. It is expected that spot prices for Chinese ferrochrome would generally stabilize supported by chrome ore prices in January.
