    1.1 Definition and applications
    1.1.1 Definition
Rare earth elements or rare earth metals are a collection of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, namely scandium, yttrium and the 15 lanthanides. Scandium and yttrium are considered rare earths since they tend to occur in the same ore deposits as the lanthanides and share similar chemical properties with them.

    1.1.2 Applications
Rare earth fields of application include the metallurgy, chemistry, new materials, military and other high technological areas. Within the function materials, the main applications are for NdFeB magnets, catalytics, phosphor powder, polishing powder, ceramic pigment, glass clarifying agent and battery.
