The supply of Chinese low grade silicon metal remained tight in early July with most sales of 5-5-3 standing at RMB9,600/t delivered to ports. Many Inner Mongolia silicon plants halted production in mid-July after the environmental protection task force arrived. More plants in China chose to suspend production due to thin margins. The month of July is traditionally the slack season for silicon metal as overseas markets are on summer break and domestic aluminium alloy plants halt production to carry out maintenance. The price found stability in late July due to the higher cost of raw material and transportation, even though downstream demand weakened further.
