From the start of May, downstream consumers from both domestic and overseas markets kept forcing prices down with a negative attitude towards market prospects, pushing prices for Chinese silicon metal to move down continuously. Market participants were astonished by this sharp and substantial drop. The tumble in prices of silicon metal triggered concerns among silicon metal producers in South China; as a result, some producers who originally planned to restore production were cautious about resuming production and some of active producers started to reduce outputs with prices remaining on a downward trend.
