1. Introduction
The global economy remained sluggish and China’s economic growth continued to slow down in 2015, causing demand for energy and raw materials to plummet around the world with prices for almost all commodities suffering a sharp decline, and the cadmium market was not immune to the impact. The global cadmium market tumbled during 2015 with weakened downstream demand and plunging prices . Mainstream prices for cadmium ingot 99.99%min dropped from RMB12,600-13,000/t (USD0 . 88-0.90/lb) to the lowest level in mid November with the biggest drop hitting RMB5,400/t (USD0.38/lb), and eventually saw a total reduction of RMB3,500/t (USD0.24/lb) throughout the year . As the Chinese nonferrous smelting industry repeatedly tightened its environmental policies and the international market further restricted the use of cadmium in ornaments and children’s toys, the Chinese cadmium ingot market shrank further . With profit margins reducing, cadmium ingot production gradually centered to large enterprises, while small scale enterprises were gradually marginalized.
