The price of the global crude oil fluctuated in January 2016 and the LME nickel followed suit with the price of three-month nickel hovering between USD8,180-8,700/t. Producers of high grade ferronickel in China refused to drastically lower their prices as the price of nickel cathode was still very low. Therefore, stainless steel plants decided to consume nickel cathode and low grade ferronickel, resulting in an active nickel cathode market. The downstream demand of nickel sulfate was strong and the demand from ternary material plants is expected to strengthen after the Spring Festival holidays.
