The selenium powder supply in China was very abundant while the demand remained sluggish. Most of the glass and ceramics plants were still in halt and the consumption for the material was very slow. Mainstream prices for selenium powder 99.9%min in China slipped to RMB240-260/kg (USD38.6-41.9/kg), down by RMB40/kg (USD6.4/kg) compared with late April. For selenium dioxide, the prices also dropped largely to RMB135-145/kg (USD21.7-23.3/kg), down by RMB30/kg (USD4.8/kg) compared with the previous month. The low operating rate in manganese plants brought no hope to the suppliers.
In May, some major Chinese tellurium 99.99% producers still suspended selling the material due to the low prices. However, the supply on the market was still abundant and the mainstream prices continued to weigh down RMB40/kg (USD6.4/kg) to RMB460-490/kg (USD74.1-78.9/kg). Traders also stepped sideways because there was no inquiry and if they held stocks in hand, the dropping trend would make them no profit at all. The weak demand from refrigeration industry in China continued in May.
