The prices of both selenium 99.9% and selenium dioxide 98% dropped continuously in China throughout March, falling to RMB305-325/kg (USD49.2-52.4/kg) and RMB190-200/kg (USD30.6-32.3/kg) respectively at the end of the month, RMB45/kg (USD7.3/kg) and RMB30/kg (USD4.8/kg) lower than in the early part of the month. Some glass, ceramic and manganese flake producers had stocked up on materials before the Spring Festival and didn’t need to make purchases in March, while others reduced their purchasing in view of the declining downstream market and softening selenium prices, forcing suppliers to move down quotations in the face of greater sales pressure.
Chinese tellurium 99.99% prices were on a downtrend in March, witnessing a total decline of RMB40/kg (USD6.5/kg) to RMB510-540/kg (USD82.3-87.1/kg). Many downstream refrigeration plants reported poorer sales compared with the previous year, so their consumption of tellurium was reduced. Producers offered price discounts in order to promote sales, as raw material prices had also dropped and the market supply remained abundant. In addition, traders mainly stuck with hand-to-mouth procurement, being pessimistic about future market trends.
