Demand for Chinese selenium 99.9% and selenium dioxide continued to show a downtrend in December, with the mainstream prices dropping to RMB355-375/kg (USD56.7-59.9/kg) and RMB195-205/kg (USD31.2-32.8/kg) respectively. The higher import volume of selenium in November increased the supply, while slow purchasing activity from the glass and ceramic industries applied downward pressure on prices. Meanwhile, Chinese domestic copper plants moved their quotations for crude selenium down sharply in order to achieve sales targets at the end of the year, leading to a reduction in the price of selenium dioxide, together with a fall in operating rates among manganese flake plants, over the month.
Tellurium 99.99% prices decreased further, falling by RMB40/kg (USD6.4/kg) to RMB620-650/kg (USD99.0-103.8/kg) in December, as poor sales persuaded refrigeration flake producers to avoid purchasing the material, while at the same time demand from solar industries failed to pick up. The quantity for single deals appeared widely below 300kg, and participants expected the prices to maintain their downward trend in the coming month.
