Yunnan province is the second largest refined zinc production base in China, behind only Hunan province. The lead-zinc ore reserves within the province are large, so raw materials are plentiful for zinc smelters. Average operating rates for zinc smelters in Yunnan were around 78% in the first half of 2014, higher than the 73% of Chinese zinc smelters as a whole. As zinc prices began to climb in the second quarter, and some new projects have gone into production, refined zinc capacity and output will both increase in Yunnan in 2014.
