The operating rate for silicon metal smelters in South China has increased gradually since late May and early June as we moved into the rainy season. Well into July, the supply for 5-5-3 on the spot market increased obviously, while the demand was weak, and thus, the prices for 5-5-3 decreased sharply. Supported by the stable demand and relatively low inventory, Chinese high-grade silicon metal prices kept firm in July and some transaction prices even increased slightly. The demand for chemical grade silicon metal was strong in July, especially that from the downstream organosilicon industry, and the prices for chemical grade silicon metal rose slightly.
