Zinc smelters in Northwest China can be mainly found in Shaanxi, Gansu and Qinghai provinces. The total annual refined zinc capacity in the three provinces is 1.25 million tonnes, making up 19.40% of the national capacity in China. Output from the three provinces totaled around 1 million tonnes in 2013, accounting for 20.56% of the total Chinese output. Capacity will increase somewhat in the region during 2014, but any growth in output will be limited by overhauling or other halts in production at some of the zinc smelters.
