As one of important raw materials in steelmaking, steel scrap plays an important role in energy consumption during the whole steelmaking process. According to statistics released by CISA, increase of raw material costs accounted for 66.7% of total increase of pig iron producing costs in 2010. Fuel and energy costs increased 34.1% while manufacturing overheads decreased 1.0%. Steel mills only achieved marginal profits mainly due to increase of raw materials costs. Reducing ratio between iron usage and steel output is a main method of lowering energy consumption in current steel industry.
