Lithium cobalt oxide price on the downward tendency

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 9 Nov 12 – Though battery grade lithium carbonate price keeps at around RMB42-44/kg (USD6.66-6.97/kg), mainstream price of cobalt tetroxide falls to around RMB160-164/kg (USD25.36-25.99/kg) and it is reported that some deals of cobalt tetroxide are made at about RMB158/kg (USD25.04/kg), mainstream price of lithium cobalt oxide is likely to go down further from the current level of RMB182-187/kg (USD28.84-29.64/kg).
A producer in North China reported that their price of lithium cobalt oxide is about RMB186/kg (USD29.48/kg) and some competitors have lowered prices to around RMB180/kg (USD28.53/kg) and some small producers sell at a little bit lower than RMB180/kg (USD28.53/kg).
At present, lithium carbonate of battery grade price is stable at about RMB42-44/kg (USD6.66-6.97/kg), but cobalt tetroxide price keeps falling. In addition, according to the source, demand from downstream factories is not strong in domestic market and competition among suppliers is fierce, so the price of lithium cobalt oxide is forecasted to drop in the near future.
A consumer in Guangdong revealed to Asian Metal that they bought 10t of lithium cobalt oxide at around RMB183/kg (USD29.00/kg) two days ago. “One month ago, the raw materials I got was RMB185-187/kg (USD29.32-29.64/kg),” said the source whose consumption of lithium cobalt oxide is 10tpm.
Meanwhile, the source reported that their demand of lithium cobalt oxide this year is almost the same as that in 2011. “Demand does not increase much in 2012 impacted by slowly moving economy,” he added. Furthermore, they also use three to four tons of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide per month as raw materials.
