Hunan Yuneng to build new energy battery materials recycling project

Hunan Yuneng New Energy Battery Material Co., Ltd. has announced plans to build a major integrated mining-chemical new energy battery materials recycling project in Weng'an County, Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. The total investment for the project is estimated at RMB24 billion (USD 3.54 billion), with a construction timeline of approximately five years.
This investment is a key component of the company's vertical integration strategy. The project scope includes production capacities of 800,000tpy lithium iron phosphate (LFP), 1,000,000tpy iron phosphate, and upstream supply chain facilities covering phosphate resources (mining, beneficiation, phosphate chemicals, and sulfuric acid for phosphoric acid production), iron sources (pyrite, etc.), lithium carbonate processing, and lithium battery recycling.
In a separate announcement, Hunan Yuneng confirmed the termination of its previously planned 500,000tpy copper smelting and supporting project at the Shuanglong Industrial Park in Fuquan City, Guizhou Province. The decision to scrap the project comes amid significant shifts in both global and domestic copper smelting market dynamics and regulatory policies. Under current guidelines, new copper smelting projects are generally required to be paired with a corresponding share of equity copper concentrate production capacity. Given constraints on copper concentrate resource availability, the company determined that it could no longer meet the policy requirements for copper concentrate self-sufficiency, making further advancement of the project unviable.
