The Uzbek government has announced the commissioning of a new casting and rolling complex at the state-owned steel producer Uzmetkombinat in Bekabad, marking the country's first-ever production facility for hot-rolled steel sheets.
According to the official statement, the complex is Uzbekistan's first plant capable of manufacturing hot-rolled steel sheets. Once fully operational, it will have an annual capacity of 1 million metric tons, with an estimated annual production value of UZS 8 trillion (approximately $662.86 million).
The facility is expected to fully satisfy the sheet steel demand of metallurgical plants in Tashkent and Samarkand, while also generating 1,200 new jobs.
As part of its long-term strategy to tap into the country's 1.5-billion-ton domestic iron ore reserves, the company also plans to build a $180 million metallurgical plant and expand mining operations at the Tebinbulak and Surun-ota deposits.
