  • Sweden grants 25-year mining concession for major rare earth deposit

The Swedish government has awarded Leading Edge Materials a 25-year mining concession for what the company describes as one of Europe's most significant rare earth deposits.

In a statement released on Monday, the Canadian critical minerals explorer announced that its Norra Karr project in southern Sweden had received the exploitation concession, following a formal recommendation from the country's mining inspectorate endorsing its development.

According to Leading Edge, a key factor in the government's decision was the project's strategic importance to both Sweden and the European Union. The company cited a previous study by the Geological Survey of Sweden, which confirmed Norra Karr as one of Europe's richest rare earth deposits.

The report specifically highlighted the project's unusually high concentration of so-called "heavy rare earths"-including terbium, dysprosium, and yttrium-all of which are essential inputs for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and other advanced technologies, including defense applications.

In the company's press release, CEO Budge noted that Norra Karr has "the capacity to supply all of Europe's annual dysprosium requirements alongside meaningful terbium and yttrium production," offering what he described as a "realistic solution" for the continent as it seeks to reduce its dependence on Chinese imports.

A preliminary economic assessment (PEA) conducted in 2021 outlined a potential 26-year mine life, with average annual production of 5,340 tonnes of mixed rare earth oxides (MREOs). That estimate was based on material representing approximately 30% of the project's inferred resource of 110 million tonnes grading 0.Asian Metal Copyright In a statement released on Monday, the Canadian critical minerals explorer announced that its Norra Karr project in southern Sweden had received the exploitation concession, following a formal recommendation from the country's mining inspectorate endorsing its development.Asian Metal Copyright5% total rare earth oxides (TREOs).

With the mining lease now secured, Leading Edge said it will advance the project toward an updated pre-feasibility study (PFS) and initiate discussions with potential offtake partners and financiers, with the goal of bringing Norra Karr into production.
