India JSW Steel Limited has started prospecting at the Gadhchiroli iron ore block in the western state of Maharashtra, the company said on May 26. The deposit was acquired through an auction three years ago, and the exploration paves the way for a planned 25-million-tonne-per-year greenfield steel mill at the site.
Chairman Sajjan Jindal said in a statement that Gadhchiroli is ideally suited for steelmaking given its proximity to iron ore reserves, adding that the integrated plant will take off once the mining rights are secured.
Jindal noted that the Gadhchiroli mill is part of the company's push to raise annual steelmaking capacity to 50 million tonnes by 2030.
