Novelis Oswego hot mill to restart ahead of schedule

Novelis said the fire-damaged hot mill at its Oswego, New York, plant is now expected to resume production in the next few weeks, ahead of the previous restart timeline of end-June. The update was provided in the company's financial report published on May 19, 2026. The Oswego site suffered two separate significant fires in September and November 2025, both confined to the hot mill area. No injuries occurred and all other critical assets remained unaffected and operational.
"The Oswego plant has made strong progress in advancing recovery efforts, and commissioning activities are ramping up," the company said, adding that returning the hot mill to service will allow it to support pent-up demand and normalise shipments over time.
The Oswego site is Novelis' largest wholly owned plant in North America, primarily supplying aluminum products for the automotive, construction, and beverage can products, with an annual output exceeding 1 billion pounds. At the beginning of the year, CRU Group estimated Oswego's total capacity may have reached about 560,000tpy in 2025.
