China has made a significant breakthrough in chromite exploration, with a major discovery in Xinjiang. China Geological Survey under the Ministry of Natural Resources, together with local natural resources authorities in Xinjiang, has identified the Saertuohai No. 27 ore cluster in the Saertuohai metallogenic belt, delineating 20 ore bodies with an average grade of 30.73%. This marks the region's largest chromite find in nearly 40 years.
Chromite is a strategic mineral in short supply in China and is widely used to produce specialty alloys containing cobalt, nickel and tungsten for application in aerospace, aviation, automotive, and shipbuilding industries.
China plans to continue its next round of mineral exploration in 2026, while also strengthening oversight and cracking down on illegal mining of strategic mineral resources.
