Northern Rare Earth to launch pilot base project for wet smelting

China North Rare Earth (Group) High-Tech Co., Ltd. announced plan to invest approximately 73.36 million yuan (10.13 million US dollars) in the construction of a wet smelting and inorganic functional materials pilot base.
The project, funded entirely by the company, will be located within the smelting branch factory of the company, covering a total area of around 10,000 square meters. Construction includes a new facility dedicated to rare earth wet smelting and inorganic functional materials research, along with supporting infrastructure. However, it does not include the establishment of a pilot production line. Construction is slated to begin in June 2025, with completion and project acceptance expected by May 2026.
The project is designed to provide a strong foundation for scientific research in wet smelting and inorganic functional materials, enabling the validation of new technologies and processes under conditions closely resembling actual production. By doing so, the company aims to accelerate the commercialization of technological advancements while mitigating industrialization risks.
The pilot base will focus on clean smelting of mixed rare earth concentrates, the balanced utilization of lanthanum and cerium, and addressing national demands for advanced new materials. It is expected to enhance product diversification and refined synthesis of lanthanum and cerium, driving high-value applications and helping to alleviate product backlog issues. Ultimately, the project will provide crucial technical support for the development of a high-value lanthanum and cerium application industry.
