A new type of heavy rare earth mineral has been discovered at Bayan Obo deposit in Inner Mongolia, China, according to a meeting held by National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Bayanoboite-Y, the new HRE mineral, was discovered by Li Guowu, Professor of China University of Geosciences Beijing and was unanimously approved by IMA-CNMNC in December 2023.
Bayanoboite-Y was found in the deep core ore of Bayan Obo deposit and has a new chemical composition and crystal structure. The new mineral contains heavy rare earth elements including yttrium, dysprosium, gadolinium, erbium and lutetium and it is also the first fluorocarbonate HRE mineral discovered in the world.
A total 18 new minerals have been unearthed at Bayan Obo deposit since 1959, accounting for nearly 10% of total newly discovered minerals in China.
