India is seeking to amend its laws to allow private companies to mine lithium. The Indian government hopes that lawmakers will approve changes to the existing policy at this session of parliament, according to people familiar with the matter. Eight minerals, including lithium, beryllium and zirconium, will be removed from a restricted list that currently prohibits mining by private companies.
According to data released by India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India's import amount of lithium-ion batteries went up by 54% YOY to $1.83 billion in the past year ended March 2022 and about 87% of the imports came from China.
