It is reported that when the SADC delegation visited the Tanzanian Coastal Iron and Steel Plant, the director of the plant appealed to the Tanzanian Government to raise the tariff on steel imports from the current 25% to 35%
. The person in charge said that due to the low tariff on steel imports, most of the large-scale construction contractors under construction in Tanzania import steel from abroad . The local steel industry in Tanzania lacks competitiveness . The government should raise tariffs to create a fair competitive environment for Tanzanian iron and steel enterprises . The delegation's representative from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Tanzania responded that the government had received relevant appeals and attached great importance to them, and was currently studying and dealing with them.
