Cobalt powder price drops slightly

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 6 Aug 12 – Impacted by slowly moving cemented carbide and diamond tools industries, mainstream price of cobalt powder decreases to about RMB250-260/kg (USD39.43-41.01/kg), down by around RMB5/kg (USD0.79/kg) compared with that of a week ago. There is no sign showing that cemented carbide and diamond tools sectors will recover in a short time, and it is generally predicted that cobalt powder price will hover at a low level.
A cemented carbide producer in Zhejiang disclosed that he bought a batch of cobalt powder at RMB255/kg (USD40.22/kg) from a Guangdong producer at the end of July. “As far as I learn, price of some deals of cobalt powder dips to about RMB250/kg (USD39.43/kg) at the present time,” said the source. “Cobalt powder price is dropping, and we try to keep stock of the raw materials as low as possible to fewer than one ton,” he added.
The source also confirms that cemented carbide market moves slowly affected by quiet real estate and car markets. He revealed that their consumption of cobalt powder decreases to about two tons per month recently, down from 3.5t per month on average in 2011.
Another cemented carbide producer in Hunan whose consumption of cobalt powder is about one ton, reported that he purchased one ton of the raw materials at RMB253/kg (USD39.91/kg) two days ago. He confirms that demand for cemented carbide is weak, especially from overseas market. According to him, their export volume of cemented carbide cuts by about 30% in July YOY.
A cobalt powder producer in Guangdong confirms that most of their transactions are concluded at RMB250-255/kg (USD39.43-40.22/kg) at the present time, down from RMB255-260/kg (USD40.22-41.01/kg) at the end of July.
