2011 Chinese germanium producers joint conference held in Chengjiang, Yunnan

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 29 Apr 11 - 2011 Chinese germanium producers joint conference was held in Chengjiang, Yunnan on April 17, 2011. The content of this conference is to ensure sustained healthy development of germanium market and to pursue discourse power of germanium pricing in international market. Officers of Yunnan Provincial Industry & Information Technology Commission as well as main domestic producers attended the conference.
First of all, Mr. Bao Wendong, president of Yunnan Germanium, introduced the Yunnan Germanium’s strategic of develop high-end products and extend the germanium’s value chain in the “Twelfth Five Year”. Mr. Bao remarked that Yunnan Germanium will enlarge advantaging of the financing platform in stock market, focus on developing salable germanium infrared, germanium photovoltaic and high-end special germanium products on demand in the “Twelfth Five Year” in Science and Technology Industry Zone in Kunming to continuous extend value chain and drive the development of relative industries by seizing the great opportunity of implementing national of provincial strategic project during the “Twelfth Five Year”. Mr. Bao also proposed an idea for developing that “Facing challenges and opportunities, sharing resource, sharing technology, sharing opportunities, realizing mutual benefit.”
Mr. Wang Yiguo, the director of Industry of Raw Materials Division of Yunnan Provincial Industry & Information Technology Commission, made a speech in the conference. Mr. Wang Yiguo stated that as a kingdom of nonferrous metals, Yunnan was richly endowed by nature with abundant resource, especially rare dispersive metals such as germanium and indium, but Yunnan mainly produced raw material metals and initial products. In 2010, Yunnan’s production of germanium metal was 60t, accounting for 60% of China’s production, but most of these germanium products were raw materials and rough-wrought products of low-end technology as Yunnan relied on the export market heavily and the prices has deviated from the values for a long term due to lacking of the power of pricing in international market, so the resource advantage of Yunnan can not be transformed into the economy advantages.
Mr. Wang Yiguo added that the national strategy storage had been accelerated as the restructuring and promoting plan of nonferrous metal industry was approved on principle at the State Council routine conference held by Premier Wen Jiabao on February 25, 2009. The plan specified that the national storage mechanism should be established as soon as possible to strengthen the guaranteed capacity of resources and made great effort on updating technologies and development and research to support the export of deep processing products with high-end technology and high added value. Besides, Yunnan will conduct the storage system of minor metals with governmental investment and support from enterprises. Meanwhile, Yunnan will conduct the system of export operation right through authorizing leading enterprises with export licenses and making specifications on restricting export of raw materials and initial products, technological innovation, and independent innovation, so as to provide opportunity of storage and development with 10 rare metals, including germanium, indium and rare earth.
The conference focused on the national strategy storage and discussed about promoting reasonable use of germanium, improving added value and competitiveness of products, trend in global market, and striving for the power of pricing germanium in international market successfully and warmly.
The conference showed that germanium is a typical rare dispersive metal and essential storage material of national defense as well as a valuable non-renewable resource and of great importance for guaranteeing national security and national economic construction. For a long time, the germanium industry has been restricted as the market mechanism is imperfect and the germanium price deviates from its actual value. For the development of enterprises and the construction of national economy, Chinese germanium producers should seize the great opportunity of national strategy storage of 10 rare metals including germanium, indium and rare earth, unify ideological understandings, enhance self-regulated system, constantly readjust the product structure, actively produce high-end products with high added value and high technology, decrease primary products, to realize industry update, make sure coordination of supply and demand, turn around the situation that deviation from its true value in long-term and increase the germanium price gradually and steadily.
