BEIJING (Asian Metal) 8 Aug 06 – With silicon market fairly quiet in Europe, sources reported they are seeing limited inquiries with producers trying to push the price up but with limited success because of the summer holiday. Nevertheless, producers feels demand from Al will be as much as that from Chemical industry when the market kick off after the summer holiday because inventories from Al has gone down
"It is now we will see the reflection of the closure of smelters by the Norwegian producer, and looking from the side of the Chinese silicon, there is hope that our price is bound to increase at the middle of August," said a European producer.
The source said there are still short notice purchases from consumers which they sell at around EUR1,290/t delivered to customers, and for September-October delivery they are quoting at around EUR1,300-1,350/t delivered to customers, however, they have not got many replies on the new price.
"We are expecting replies from the middle of August to September," said the source. "I am confident we are going to get positive replies because consumers are aware of the shortage in the market and will accept price increase . "
Meanwhile, Brazilian material is still battling with the issue of their currency appreciation against dollars and power tariff increase in Brazil.
Sources said two Brazilian producers are on the verge of selling their companies, as they cannot cope with the situation on market.
