Tungsten APT producers see the light

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 26 Aug 09 – After several weeks of complaining about the low price and high cost, tungsten APT producers raise the offer to RMB108,000-110,000/t(USD179-182/mtu) in the beginning of this week. Several deals have been concluded in the range.
A Jiangxi-based tungsten APT producer disclosed to Asian Metal that they have just sold 20t of APT at the price of RMB111,000/t(USD182/mtu). “Our price is normally RMB2000-3000/t(USD3-5/mtu) higher than the mainstream price,”the official claimed, adding that it is because their product quality is higher than the ordinary level. The source produces 500t APT monthly but only produced around 400t in July because the short supply of raw material.
The source forecasts that the APT price will keep rising as the raw material price firms up. “Someone told me it would not be too long before tungsten concentrate price moves quickly from RMB68,000-70,000/t(USD153-158/mtu) to about RMB75000/t(USD169/mtu),”he said.
A official of a Jiangxi based tungsten powder producer confirmed the APT price of RMB107,000-110,000/t(USD177-182/mtu), but he also disclosed that they can still get small amounts of APT at RMB105,000/t(USD174/mtu) from long-term suppliers. “It is difficult to buy in APT in the spot market because most producers are reluctant to sell at a low price,” he said. The source claimed that they buy APT in several batches monthly.
The source also estimated that the APT price would rise in the near future.“As the tungsten concentrate price continues to firm up, APT price will surely follow suit.”he commented, adding that both buyers and sellers are watching the market closely. “By and large, there is little possibility for APT price to fall this year,”he remarked.
However, a Jilin-based APT consumer disclosed to Asian Metal that RMB110,000/t(USD182/mtu) is not acceptable for them, as the price of downstream products such as tungsten wire and tungsten powder keeps stable. “We now buy in APT at RMB108,000-109,000/t(USD179-180/mtu),” he claimed. The source has a monthly production capacity of 10t for tungsten wire, but only produced 5t in July.
