Chromium metal almost out of stock in Europe

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 20 Feb 09 – Chromium metal demand has been steady though in generality the market is quiet. However, sources in the market hinted that there are very limited materials available now.
A market source in Europe reported that chromium metal price is stable at around USD8, 300/t d.p. in warehouse Rotterdam for the standard grade Russian-origin material, and added that he sold 5t early in the week at the above level. The source revealed that there is lack of Russian-origin material because the old stock has been cleared, and European producers operating now are only producing electrolytic grade. He commented that he has no stock again to offer to customers.
Another market source in Europe informed that chromium metal market is not different from silicomanganese market that is very quiet, and that the price is steady at around USD8,400/t d.p. in warehouse Rotterdam, but did not confirm any deal this week. He added that there were lots of stocks before but have disappeared now, even though chromium metal market is not a big one in Europe.
Chrome ore prices are still relatively low and demand is very sluggish, participants think chromium metal market will need special intervention for it to be strong and prices to firm in the nearest furture.
