Sidersa, an Argentine steel company, is building its first steel plant in San Nicolas de los Arroyos, Buenos Aires Province, with a US$300 million investment, using electric arc furnaces and local scrap to produce 360,000 tons of low-carbon steel annually.
The project, which has created hundreds of jobs and secured US$100 million from ICBC Argentina, is the first industrial beneficiary of the country's Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI), offering tax breaks and long-term regulatory stability.
Currently 27% complete with production targeted for the first half of 2028, the facility promises up to 70% lower emissions than traditional methods. However, achieving these environmental goals hinges on the future integration of renewable energy, the maturity of domestic scrap collection, and sustained local market demand.
