Ukrainian forces struck the AVISMA chemical and metallurgical plant, one of the world's largest titanium sponge producers, in Russia's Perm Krai on October 25, according to Ukrainian and Russian monitoring channels.
Located more than 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) from the Ukrainian-Russian border, AVISMA has been under U.S. sanctions since 2023.
According to data from the United States Geological Survey, the group produced approximately 33,500 tons of sponge titanium in 2024, accounting for roughly 96% of Russia's total sponge titanium output. The company's claimed sponge titanium production capacity is 44,000 tons per year, and multiple sources have reported a significant decline in output in 2025.
Local authorities confirmed the attack occurred, stating that air defense systems shot down 11 drones and caused "minor damage" to an industrial facility. Preliminary information indicates that five employees were injured. The sponge titanium produced by the plant is a high-end titanium alloy raw material used in the manufacture of structural components for aircraft, aerospace equipment, and certain guidance systems. The attack may affect the stability of Russia's titanium supply chain, and the resulting damage to production capacity remains to be assessed.
