Metlen Energy & Metals plans to produce 50 tonnes of gallium, with commercial production set to begin in the third quarter of 2027, Executive Chairman Evangelos Mytilineos told attendees at the Financial Times Energy Transition Summit in London this week.
Following its current expansion, the company said it expects to reach 1.3 million tonnes of alumina production.
Under a subsequent agreement, Metlen said it is almost certain that its entire 50-tonne annual output will be sold out before commercial production begins.
According to Mytilineos, the know-how to extract gallium was developed in-house by Metlen's R&D team. He said gallium production is mainly a matter of know-how rather than a capital-intensive investment, provided the alumina base is already in place.
