India will release a draft National Steel Policy for public consultation within a week, targeting 600 million tons of steel production capacity by 2047.
The forthcoming framework, which replaces the outdated 2017 policy, focuses on premium specialty steels, import substitution and technological competitiveness for smaller domestic producers. Proposed measures to curb substandard imports include safeguard and anti-dumping duties.
The strategy also aims to cut average carbon emission intensity to 1.54 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of crude steel by 2047, down from 2.54 tons.
Projected resource requirements include 772 million tons of iron ore and 214 million tons of coking coal, driving plans to secure foreign reserves and diversify global sourcing.
