  • Eramet resumes operations at Indonesian nickel mine

    2026-09-11 11:28:55   [Print]
French mining group Eramet has restarted operations at the Weda Bay nickel mine in Indonesia after suspending output earlier this year when it exhausted a reduced mining quota.

Indonesia, the world's largest nickel producer, cut mining volume permits this year as part of efforts to tighten control over commodity exports and prices.

Eramet said in a statement that mining operations at PT Weda Bay Nickel (PT WBN) are progressively resuming with authorisation from Indonesian authorities.

The French firm said it will provide an update on its 2026 guidance for external nickel ore sales in due course, and that PT WBN continues constructive dialogue with Indonesian authorities.

The statement did not indicate whether PT WBN had secured an additional mining allowance, and an Eramet spokesperson declined to comment further.

Weda Bay, the world's largest nickel mine, was placed on care and maintenance in May after Eramet said its initial production allowance of 12 million wet metric tonnes for the year had been used up.

That 2026 allocation compares with an initial allocation of 32 million wet metric tonnes in 2025.

Eramet jointly owns PT WBN with Chinese steel group Tsingshan and Indonesian state-owned PT Antam Tbk.
