Rusal advances plans for bauxite and alumina complex in Indonesia

Russian aluminium giant Rusal announced on Friday that it is progressing with a project to construct a bauxite and alumina complex in Indonesia, as part of its strategy to secure raw material supplies.
Although Rusal, the world's largest aluminium producer outside China, has previously explored opportunities in Indonesia, earlier tentative projects failed to move forward.
While the company has not been subject to Western sanctions, it has been actively working to reduce its dependence on third-party suppliers of alumina---a key raw material in aluminium production.
In 2022, Rusal lost approximately 40% of its alumina supply following disruptions from Ukraine and Australia.
In 2025, the company produced 6.858 million tonnes of alumina, which accounted for 4.7% of global output and met 85% of its own alumina requirements.
