Italian crude steel output falls in July, first decline since December 2025

According to the latest data released by Federacciai, the Italian federation of steel companies, Italy's crude steel production in July 2026 totalled approximately 1.7 million metric tonnes, down 1.8% compared with July 2025. This marks the first year-on-year decline since December of last year. In the January–July period of 2026, Italian crude steel output reached 13.2 million metric tonnes, representing a 2.8% increase year on year.
Looking at product details, hot-rolled steel output showed divergent trends across the two main product categories in July, reversing the pattern seen in previous months. Long product output, which had posted 12 consecutive months of growth, totalled approximately 1.0 million metric tonnes in July, down 7.8% year on year. Nevertheless, in the January–July period, long product output remained in positive territory, reaching 8.0 million metric tonnes, up 6.0% compared with the same period of 2025.
By contrast, flat product output in July rose by 4.5% year on year to 772,000 metric tonnes, continuing its recent recovery. In the first seven months of the year, flat product output totalled 5.4 million metric tonnes, down 4.3% compared with the same period of 2025.
