Red Dog expansion secures FAST-41 federal permitting status

The U.S. Permitting Council has granted the Red Dog Mine Life Extension project in Northwest Alaska full coverage under the FAST-41 program---a federal initiative designed to streamline permitting reviews for major infrastructure projects deemed strategically important to the nation, by enhancing transparency, coordination, and efficiency.
For nearly four decades, Red Dog has ranked among the world's largest zinc producers, typically supplying about 5% of global output, alongside substantial quantities of lead, silver, and germanium. All four metals now feature on the U.S. Critical Minerals List, underscoring the operation's national significance.
Yet the ore bodies that have powered Red Dog for close to 40 years are approaching exhaustion. As remaining reserves dwindle in both volume and grade, annual production is steadily declining, with the current mine set to reach the end of its operational life around 2031.
However, large, zinc-rich deposits located on state land roughly ten miles north of the existing facility offer a potential lifeline. These resources could sustain feed to Red Dog's mill and supporting infrastructure well beyond the current mine's closure.
Teck's proposed Life Extension project aims to channel ore from two of these deposits-Aktigiruq and Anarraaq-directly to the existing processing plant.
According to Teck's February annual report, Aktigiruq contains 42.2 million metric tonnes of indicated resource at an average grade of 15.8% zinc, plus 18.8 million metric tonnes of inferred resource at 11.8% zinc, positioning it as one of the world's largest undeveloped high-grade zinc deposits. Neighbouring Anarraaq, to the south, adds a further 17 million metric tonnes of inferred resource grading 14% zinc. Both deposits also carry lead, silver, and germanium.
The permitting process currently underway envisions an underground mining operation that would deliver ore from Aktigiruq and Anarraaq to the Red Dog mill over an initial 14-year production period.
