Colombia repeals 10 resolutions that restricted mining in designated areas

The Colombian government has repealed, by decree, ten resolutions that previously restricted the exploration and exploitation of natural resources in certain parts of the country, Mining Minister Maria Nohemi Arboleda announced on Thursday.
The resolutions were originally enacted under the previous leftist administration. Incoming right-wing President Abelardo De La Espriella has pledged to reverse policies that limit oil and mining activity as part of his broader strategy to revitalize the national economy. Several of the proposed changes can be implemented through executive decrees, including simplifying administrative procedures, shortening licensing timelines, and streamlining community consultation processes.
"Mineral districts were originally conceived to bring order to land-use planning and to support mining regions," Arboleda explained during a mining conference in Cartagena. "However, they ended up being used as a tool to restrict mining, were poorly designed, and as a result discouraged investment and exploration---dealing a heavy blow to small-scale mining and efforts to formalize the sector."
Industry associations point out that Colombia holds significant untapped potential across a range of commodities, including copper, gold, coal, and nickel.
