Romania's UMB Steel nears restart of Otelu Rosu Plant with 700,000 mt long-steel capacity

The long-dormant Otelu Rosu steel plant in Romania is edging closer to a restart, as domestic company UMB Steel advances its redevelopment plans for the site. The facility has been idle since 2012 and is expected to resume operations with an annual long-steel production capacity of approximately 700,000 tonnes.
The project represents a significant strategic shift for UMB, extending its activities beyond infrastructure construction and into steel manufacturing.
According to local media reports, the future production route will combine scrap-based electric-arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking with continuous casting and rolling. The planned product portfolio is set to include rebar, other straight bars, compact coils, and wire rod---a mix clearly oriented toward meeting construction-sector demand.
