Alcoa Corporation announced on Monday that it has commenced construction of a new gallium production facility at its Wagerup alumina refinery in Western Australia. The project is being developed in partnership with government entities and industry partners from Australia, Japan, and the United States.
Gallium is primarily recovered as a byproduct of alumina production from bauxite, rather than being mined as a primary ore.
According to the company, the new plant is expected to generate up to 200 construction jobs and approximately 20 permanent positions once it becomes operational.
