Codelco's delayed El Teniente expansion project now set for 2029 startup

Chilean state-owned copper miner Codelco now expects to commence production at an expansion project within its flagship El Teniente mine in 2029, according to the mine's general director, Gustavo Reyes, speaking on Wednesday.
On August 4, Codelco announced that it had suspended the project-which is designed to develop the Andes Norte sector of the vast underground operation-after recent studies indicated that the mine faces greater seismic risks than previously assessed.
During the same committee session, Codelco's Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Gabriel Mendez, added that the company no longer anticipates meeting its earlier annual production target of 1.7 million metric tons by the end of this decade.
