METLEN secures long-term gallium supply deal with major U.S. tech firm

METLEN Energy & Metals S.A., the Athens-based multinational industrial and energy group, has signed a long-term commercial agreement to supply approximately 25% of the annual gallium output from its planned Greek production facility. METLEN operates the European Union's only vertically integrated bauxite, alumina, and primary aluminium production unit, complete with privately owned port infrastructure.
This marks the first major gallium supply agreement between a European producer and a leading U.S. technology company, representing a strategic milestone in Europe's push to enhance the resilience of its critical raw materials supply chain.
As the first company in Europe to establish integrated gallium production, METLEN is also the first to secure a commercial offtake agreement for European-sourced gallium. The company aims to commence production in 2027, with output expected to reach 50 tonnes annually by 2028---a volume sufficient to fully cover the European Union's entire demand.
The agreement comes amid tightening Chinese export controls on gallium, a critical mineral essential for defense systems, artificial intelligence applications, and semiconductor manufacturing. These restrictions have accelerated Western efforts to develop independent, domestic sources of such strategic materials.
