India's SAIL approves capacity expansion of Bhilai Steel Plant

India's state-owned steelmaker Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has formally approved the expansion of its Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) to 10.2 million tonnes per year, up from the current 6.8 million tonnes per year, with an estimated investment of $3.22 billion, junior steel minister Bhupati Raju Srinivasan informed India's parliament on Wednesday, July 22.
He stated that all major raw materials for the expanded operations will be sourced from SAIL's captive mines, as well as from domestic and import markets. The expansion project is expected to be completed within 42 months.
