Alcoa Corp announced on Tuesday that it has reached a final investment decision to establish a gallium extraction facility at its Wagerup alumina refinery in Western Australia. The project has secured backing from the Australian, Japanese, and U.S. governments, alongside industry partners.
The U.S.-based aluminium producer plans to construct and operate the plant, which is expected to supply up to 10% of the global gallium market. The company noted that construction will commence once final site preparations are completed.
Gallium, a byproduct of alumina production, is increasingly recognized as a critical mineral for the technology sector, with particular importance in semiconductor manufacturing and defense applications.
